Big 6 Step 1: Task Definition

You are about to embark on a research journey with your family! You must first define your task.

  • Make a list of some possible topics that might be of interest to everyone. Choose one topic for your research.
    • TIP-- Give everyone a sticky or piece of paper to write down a topic. Discuss and vote on one of the topics.

  • Together, brainstorm as many questions as you can about the topic.
    • TIP--Think about what you would like to know and what you would need to know in order to teach the information to someone else.
    • TIP--Think of the 5 Ws: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and other question words.
    • TIP--On a sheet of paper, write down every question family members ask, even if someone else in the family thinks they already know the answer. Give everyone an opportunity to ask a question.
    • TIP-- Create a folder or big envelope to keep all of your research materials. Put the topic on the front and have all of the family research members sign it. You can even let everyone help decorate it!
